Great work!

XP to next level

BugEater

Level Up — The Gamification System

BugEater isn't just a content library. It's a system designed to turn the act of learning into something you want to keep doing. The gamification layer — XP, levels, badges, and streaks — is that system. This lesson explains exactly how it works so you can use it to your advantage.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson you will be able to:

  • Explain how XP is earned and what diminishing returns means in practice
  • Name the 10 XP levels from Larva to The BugEater
  • Describe when and how Module Badges are awarded
  • Explain the daily streak mechanic and why consistency beats intensity

XP: Experience Points

Every lesson and practice on BugEater has an XP value. When you complete it, that XP is added to your Total XP shown on the Dashboard.

Diminishing Returns

Learning the same material repeatedly still has value — but less than the first time. BugEater reflects this honestly:

Attempt XP Earned
1st (first time) 100% of the lesson's XP
2nd (retry) 50% of the lesson's XP
3rd and beyond 25% of the lesson's XP

This encourages you to move forward rather than farming XP on easy content you've already mastered.

The 10 XP Levels

As your Total XP grows, you advance through 10 levels. Each one has a name that tells the story of your progression:

Level Name XP Needed
1 Larva 0
2 Flyswatter 150
3 Pest Control 400
4 Bug Hunter 800
5 Spider 1,500
6 Exterminator 2,500
7 Venomous 4,000
8 Bug Reaper 6,000
9 Apex Predator 9,000
10 The BugEater 13,000

You start as a Larva — small, just hatched, full of potential. The journey to The BugEater is long, but every lesson you complete moves the needle.

Module Badges

At the end of every Module sits a Badge — a visual reward you earn when you complete all lessons and practices in that module.

Badges are displayed on your Dashboard and will eventually appear on your profile. They're proof that you've gone deep on a topic, not just skimmed the surface.

Important: You need to complete every lesson AND every practice in a module to earn its badge. There are no shortcuts.

Daily Streaks

Your streak counts how many consecutive days you've had at least one learning activity (completing a lesson, finishing a practice, or submitting a quiz).

Event Effect on streak
Activity today Streak + 1 (or stays at current if you already had one today)
No activity today Streak resets to 1 tomorrow
Check longest_streak Always preserved — your personal best never disappears

The Psychology of Streaks

A streak of 3 days is motivating. A streak of 30 days is powerful. The longer your streak, the more you want to protect it — and that instinct is exactly what makes consistent learners better than irregular ones. Even on a busy day, a single Daily Challenge is enough to keep the chain going.

Favorites

You can bookmark any course, module, lesson, or practice by tapping the heart/bookmark icon. Your favorites are saved to your profile and let you quickly return to content you want to revisit.

Pro Tips

Aim for progress, not perfection. You don't need a perfect quiz score to earn XP. Completing is what matters.

Protect your streak above all else. On a hectic day, open the app, knock out a single Daily Challenge, and close it. That's all you need to keep your streak alive.

Badges are honest. When you see the Ecosystem Explorer badge on someone's profile, it means they did the work — all of it. Earn yours with the same integrity.

Summary

BugEater's gamification system is built on three pillars: XP that compounds as you advance through 10 named levels, Module Badges that reward depth, and daily streaks that reward consistency. Together they create a learning habit that sticks — not because it feels like a chore, but because the system is satisfying to engage with.

Quiz

You complete a lesson for the third time. What percentage of the lesson's XP do you receive?

When do you earn a Module Badge?

You studied yesterday, skipped today, and return tomorrow. What happens to your streak?
