Levels & Code Access: Boxes & Stages
What This Module Is About
You've heard the terms in job postings, in interviews, in team meetings: black-box testing, unit tests, UAT, beta testing. They float around as if everyone already knows what they mean.
This module lands them firmly on the ground. ๐ฆ
We cover two classic axes of testing theory:
Axis 1 โ Code Access: How much do you know about the internals of what you're testing?
- Black box โ You're a user. You see inputs and outputs. The code is a mystery.
- White box โ You're inside the code. You can trace paths, cover branches, test functions directly.
- Gray box โ You have some knowledge. Maybe you've seen the API docs or know the database schema, but you still test through the UI.
Axis 2 โ Testing Level: How much of the system are you testing at once?
- Unit โ One function in isolation. Owned by developers.
- Integration โ Two or more components working together.
- System โ The whole product as a black box. QA's home turf.
- Acceptance โ Business stakeholders verify the product meets real-world needs.
And then there's the human dimension: alpha and beta testing, where real people with real devices and real habits reveal what controlled lab testing never could.
What You'll Learn in This Module
- ๐ฆ The practical meaning of black, white, and gray box testing
- ๐ฉ The testing pyramid: unit, integration, system, acceptance
- ๐ฅ Who owns each testing level โ developers, QA, or stakeholders
- ๐งช How alpha testing differs from beta testing
- ๐ Why real users always find bugs that testers miss
Module Lessons
- Black, White & Gray Box โ How your level of code access changes your entire testing approach
- Testing Levels โ From Bolt to Machine โ The testing pyramid from smallest unit to full acceptance
- Alpha & Beta โ Testing With Real People โ Internal vs. external testing and what real users reveal
