Start Module

Love it or hate it — and plenty of people do both — SAFe is everywhere in enterprise. Banks, insurance companies, telecoms, and government agencies have all adopted it. If you plan to work in a large organisation, there's a good chance you'll encounter SAFe within your first three jobs.

The critics are not wrong: SAFe can feel heavy, bureaucratic, and at odds with the agile manifesto's call for individuals and interactions over processes and tools. The supporters are also not wrong: SAFe provides a structured way for large organisations to coordinate hundreds of developers who would otherwise be pulling in different directions.

This module isn't here to settle that debate. It's here to make sure you can walk into a SAFe environment and understand what's happening — and why.

Lessons in This Module

  1. The SAFe Universe — ARTs, PIs, and Program Increments — The levels, the terminology, and the organisational units that make SAFe tick
  2. PI Planning — The Quarterly Alignment Ritual — What actually happens in those two-day events, and how to prepare for and survive them
  3. Your Role in SAFe — Engineer, QA, and BA Perspectives — Team-level ceremonies, built-in quality practices, and how to add value in a framework that can feel like it's designed for managers

What You'll Master

By the end of this module, you'll be able to decode SAFe terminology, navigate PI Planning as a contributor (not just a spectator), and understand where quality and testing fit in the Agile Release Train structure.

The badge you're working toward: The SAFe Survivor badge is not ironic — surviving and contributing effectively in a SAFe environment genuinely requires skill, patience, and the ability to find meaningful work inside a complex system. That deserves recognition.
